The historic Impeachment Trial of Attorney General Ken Paxton continues this week in Austin in the Texas Senate, with final arguments set to start Thursday. A decision is expected over the weekend, if not sooner.
In May, the Texas House passed the Articles on Impeachment during the regular legislative session, alleging the Attorney General of Texas has engaged in conspiracy, bribery, obstruction of justice, and abuse of office.
The House launched an investigation into the Attorney General following his request for the Texas Legislature to pay $3M to settle with members of Paxton’s staff who have filed a whistleblower case against Paxton after being fired from the Attorney General’s office. During the investigation, the House gathered evidence that led them to concerns regarding the Attorney General’s dealings.
The Texas Constitution provides for the impeachment of a Texas official who engages in conduct unbecoming of a state official. This is only the second time in Texas history a statewide official has been through an impeachment proceeding.
Attorney General Paxton was excused from the proceedings early last week and he has not attended any portion of the trial. During the trial, Paxton has been active on social media engaging in fundraising, and announced on Wednesday that he will be headed next week to do an interview with Tucker Carlson. He was also seen at at popular Austin Spa last week.
